Rights and Responsibilities

Volunteers' Rights

Volunteers are entitled to expect the following:

  • to be treated with respect by other volunteers and by clients
  • to feel wanted and useful
  • to be adequately briefed and prepared
  • to be well supported, i.e. to know who to report to and who to go to for advice
  • not to be inconvenienced or let down
  • volunteers' phone numbers should not be given to clients
  • not to be made to feel uncomfortable if they cannot continue with work for the group - circumstances change over time

Volunteers' Responsibilities

In return, please DO:

  • carry out the task that you have agreed to do at the arranged time.  If for some reason this is not possible
    • please contact a member of the committee if the task is due with the next 24 hours  OR
    • send a text message to the co-ordinator if the task is due in over 24 hours time
  • report back if requested to do so, or if you feel that there is something that should be reported
  • discuss with the co-ordinator, or a member of the committee, any difficulties you may encounter
  • be prepared to say 'no', either to clients or RCGN if you feel you are asked to do something which seems unreasonable or too time-consuming

Please DO NOT:

  • pass on confidential information, except in vital cases, and then only to a committee member
  • become over-anxious about the work you are doing;  help and advice are available
  • underestimate the value of what you are doing.  Your contribution is very much appreciated.
